History In the 1800’s the rice plantations were well developed. Tourism began in the early 1900’s, with the first hotel built in 1901 and beachfront homes could be bought for about $500. (WHAT A GREAT INVESTMENT!) In 1936, the Inter coastal Waterway opened. The town of Myrtle Beach was officially incorporated in 1938. A major hurricane in 1954 brought about new developments and an upsurge in golf that launched Myrtle Beach into one of the most favored vacation spots.
